Mine explosives - basic knowledge on explosive properties

By Gideon Gipmai Yowa

Explosives are used in hard rock mines for rock fragmentation. Explosives are loaded into boreholes and are detonated to release shock and gas pressures that fracture and heave the rockmass. The shock energy is released upon detonation and is responsible for the tangential, radial, and lateral crack propagation while the gas energy is responsible for the dissemination of high pressure gases through the cracks and the displacement of the rockmass.
